Verizon to sell long-distance in Mass
Article Abstract:
The FCC has approved Verizon Communications' bid to offer long-distance telephone service in Massachusetts, despite the objection of other telephone companies. The agency gave its approval after Verizon refiled its application to address antitrust concerns that it is not competing fairly. Besides, Massachusetts, Verizon is also offering long-distance telephone services in New York, while affiliate SBC Communications provides it in Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma.

Sprint board backs MCI bid
Article Abstract:
MCI WorldCom is expected to announce a deal to purchase Sprint Corp for over $100 billion. Pending regulatory and shareholder approval, the acquisition could become another successful move by the takeover genius of WorldCom CEO Bernie Ebbers. Sprint CEO William Esrey was said to have been quickly persuaded to forge a deal with WorldCom after Ebbers increased his original offer by several billion dollars, beating the bid made by BellSouth Corp.
