Upscale Saks up for sale
Article Abstract:
Saks Holdings has announced it is looking for potential buyers for Saks Fifth Avenue, a high-end department store chain that operates 41 full-line stores and 39 Off 5th stores. Saks Holdings executives declined to elaborate on the sale, giving no explanation on why they want to sell the department store chain or the selling price for the retailer. However, analysts commented that Saks Fifth Avenue stocks' poor performance prompted the company to put itself up for sale. Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs is the investment firm hired by Saks Holdings to help it find a buyer or a merger partner for Saks Fifth Avenue.

Comcast springs to big time
Article Abstract:
Comcast Cable Communications Inc. has offered to acquire MediaOne for $60 billion in stock and debt. The acquisition will more than double the size of Comcast to more than 11 million subscribers, making it at par with industry behemoths Time Warner and AT&T. Some analysts, however, are questioning Comcast's wisdom in buying MediaOne at a 32% premium over MediaOne's market value on Mar 19, 1999. These critics cite the shrinking profit and subscriber base of MediaOne.
