The attack on the Eureka stockade by troops on December 3, 1854 that left 30 miners dead continues to act as a lightning rod for controversy even after 150 years. Scholarly disputants over the causes of the rebellion at Eureka have interpreted it in terms of the twin economic crises confronting the colonial administration at the time.
