Walt Disney Co is reportedly poised to sell some of its unprofitable businesses to concentrate on its core entertainment operations. The company is anticipated to announce the sale of Fairchild Publications, the publisher of women's magazines that include Jane, W and Women's Wear Daily. Walt Disney, which is anticipated to shut down some of its poorly performing Disney stores, will assess the profitability of its entertainment and sports centers, such as Disney Quest, Club Disneys and ESPN Zone, according to Edward Jones analyst Linda Bannister.

'Matrix' puts Manex on map, or vice versa?

Special-effects company Manex Entertainment LLC of San Francisco has developed an innovative optical technology called Flo-Mo. The technology, which allows objects in the movie to be frozen in midair and circled by a camera, was extensively used in the movie "The Matrix." The company also uses computer 3-D technology in developing special effects shots for movies. Manex had a revenue of $12 million in 1998.
