An ordinary hero

Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick, who was shot and died in Gallipoli on May 19, 1915, has been elevated to the status of Australian folk hero because of his apparent bravery in battle. Attempts to award Kirkpatrick the Victoria Cross 86 years after his death, bring up the controversial question of why Kirkpatrick was not awarded the honour immediately following his death.
