Is the alarm about cults justified?
Article Abstract:
Anti-cult groups claim that cults are a danger to religious freedom and democracy, while cult proponents believe the majority of these sects are well-meaning and provide their members with a sense of fulfillment. Proponents point to the fact that most cult members score well on standardized tests of mental health, and that the anti-cult industry is ignoring objective scholarly study to protect their own interests. Anti-cult forces say that cults are using the First Amendment to cover up illegal activities such as stockpiling arms and violating the rights of women and children.

Should the government restrict the advertising, promotion, distribution and marketing of cigarettes to teenagers?
Article Abstract:
The Clinton administration has authorized the FDA to make regulations that would restrict tobacco sales and advertising that target or attract minors. Among the measures would be identification requirements for purchases, a ban on cigarette vending machines and prohibition of marketing ploys that offer products of interest to teenagers such as t-shirts and gym bags. However, this approach raises freedom of speech concerns while it undercuts the tradition of letting people make their own mistakes which they pay for through higher insurance.
