Getting smokers to quit
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that workplace ban on smoking is an effective way of motivating smokers to quit smoking. 30% of smokers at the John Hopkins University Medical Center stopped smoking within one year of the imposition of a total ban on smoking. However, experts recommend that employees' opinion should be considered before an organization decides to ban smoking. They should be provided with educational material and advance warning of the organizations decision to opt for a smoke-free environment. The anti-smoking movement is being pulled in different directions as differences between professional organizations and activists surface.

Are smoking bans justified?
Article Abstract:
Public opinion on whether smoking should be banned is divided. Anti-smoking groups feel that research provides conclusive evidence that smokers pollute environment with several toxic chemicals and secondhand smoking presents significant risk to nonsmokers' health. They feel that smokers willing to quit should be provided with social and medical support, whereas those unwilling to do so should be prohibited from endangering the life of others. Those against a ban on smoking insist that such a ban will be unfair to the smokers as research on effects of secondhand smoking is inconclusive.
