Asian concerns sued by Loral over chips
Article Abstract:
Loral Fairchild Corp sues about 30 South Korean and Japanese consumer electronics corporations for allegedly infringing on a Loral patent for a charge-coupled device. The suit is novel in that it names not only the firms that allegedly copied the chip, but the corporations that used the resulting chips in their products. Charge-coupled devices are image-reading chips used in fax machines, copiers and camcorders. Reportedly, Loral Fairchild demanded royalties from the US subsidiaries of Sony Corp, NEC Corp and Matsushita Electric Industrial Corp in summer 1991; the subsidiaries refused, contending they had not infringed the patent.
