At issue: will computers render traditional libraries obsolete?
Article Abstract:
Computer technology can keep up with the task of acquiring and organizing the tremendous amount of information being produced every year, something that traditional libraries cannot perform. That computer-based information technology provides access to plenty of information can push traditional libraries to a less central role. However, the opposite argument contends that the librarian's role is not to produce, manage and sell information. The librarian gives interpersonal interaction, communication, information evaluation, synthesis and judgement. Computers may provide efficiency in the access of information, but librarians provide genuine access to knowledge.
