At Polaroid, more than snapshots
Article Abstract:
Polaroid Corp increasingly is moving in the direction of computer electronics, and the company's chairman, I. MacAllister Booth, wants business people, researchers and doctors to think of Polaroid when they want to do photography. At the company's annual meeting in May 1991, various products were shown, including: a digital scanner, a computerized system that generates medical images without using traditional film, and a printer that translates a computer screen's display into a photo. Recently, Polaroid has encountered difficulties. Already, 1991 has brought with it the death of Edwin H. Land, Polaroid's founder; the retirement of Land's successor, William J. McCune Jr; the expiration of important patents covering instant cameras and film; and a fall in profits. Industry observers are impressed with Polaroid's new products but are skeptical about rapid returns on the investments. Some analysts think Polaroid is having difficulties with marketing.

A new image: Why pros go digital
Article Abstract:
Photojournalists and professional photographers are beginning to embrace digital cameras. Photographers recording the events surrounding the World Trade Center attacks found an advantage in digital with being able to see their photos immediately. In timse of chaos, it is easier for a photographer to change memory cards than reloading film. Now, with better resolution and cheaper prices, digital cameras offer a quicker way to change light sensitivity. News agencies are embracing digital as photographers have great flexibility with a camera with an L.C.D. screen. Associated Press's entire staff is digital this year. In emergencies, one doesn't have to process film with digital cameras. Many photographers use both, with film used for panoramic shots.
