At issue: is the practice of sharing financial-aid information unfair to students?
Article Abstract:
Opposing views on the federal court ruling that the Overlap Group violated antitrust laws by sharing information on financial-aid applicants are presented. The Overlap Group is comprised of eight ivy-league schools led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) which met every year to agree on uniform aid offers to financial-aid applicants. The Overlap Group was criticized for rejecting the schools' avowed goal of offering everyone a chance to obtain the best quality education. On the other hand, MIT Pres Charles M. Vest said that the Overlap Group was a way of maximizing scarce financial aid assistance by avoiding bidding wars on the brightest students.

Community colleges feel the crunch
Article Abstract:
The ailing US economy is putting pressure on the country's 1,150 community colleges to reduce course offerings, enlarge class sizes, hire part-time professors and cut budgets for libraries and other student services. Community colleges have always been open to virtually anyone who has finished high school, as they were established to provide access to cheap higher education to those who cannot afford a normal 4-year college. However, financial difficulties are already forcing some of these colleges to discuss limiting enrollment for the first time in the history of community colleges.
