At issue: was the adultery allegation against Bill Clinton worthy of the news coverage it received?
Article Abstract:
Media professionals evaluate the press coverage of presidential candidate Bill Clinton's alleged adultery. Those who support the coverage say that newspapers publish important items according to their professional judgement and that time alone will vindicate them. If they do not publish uncomfortable issues such as sexual allegations and sexual harassment, than they miss the important function of uncovering liars and criminals. However, some people feel that the American public needs to mature on the issue of sex. They also say such news detracts from more important issues such as the economy, unemployment and AIDs.

Should journalists abandon their traditional detachment and become more actively involved in their communities?
Article Abstract:
Public journalism is a term for greater participation in communities by the press, and this is seen as an improvement in democracy by some while others consider it a decline in true journalism. A familiar example of public journalism, or civic journalism, is the newspaper op-ed page revived by The New York Times in 1970. A critique of this practice is that it leads away from the public's true needs which the press serves, namely the need for facts upon which to base one's own opinions and actions.

Civic journalism; can press reforms revitalize democracy?
Article Abstract:
Civic journalism is the idea of greater participation in communities by the press, and this is seen as an improvement in democracy by some while others consider it a decline in journalism. A newspaper can practice civic journalism by engaging its public on local issues and devoting greater coverage to these issues. Community meetings can be featured extensively, or community members can contribute opinion columns to the paper.
