Reed retires, Weill solos at Citi

Citigroup co-CEO John Reed will retire in April 2000. Reed has been sharing power with Sanford Weill since Citicorp and Travelers Group merged almost two years ago. The 61-year-old Reed oversees technology, the Internet and legal affairs, while 66-year-old Weill concentrates on business and financial operations. After Reed's retirement, Weill will be the only CEO and meet with the board to prepare succession plans within two years. Reed's retirement did not surprise experts in the banking industry.

Bank One appoints new chairman, CEO
Article Abstract:
Chicago, IL-based Bank One Corp has announced the appointment of former Citigroup Pres Jamie Dimon as its new chairman and CEO. Dimon joins Bank One at a time when the financially trouble institution is looking to stem losses resulting from problems at its $265-billion credit card subsidiary, First USA. Dimon stressed that he did not take the Bank One job to get First USA in shape to be sold. His priorities are to improve Bank One's customer service, build its financial strength and broaden its employee stock ownership.

ATM fees: gouging or fair pay?
Article Abstract:
The argument over automated teller machine (ATM) surcharges that are charged by banks to non-clients is receiving renewed attention. Banks are defending the surcharges as necessary in order to finance the convenience that people get in return for using ATMs that do not belong to their own banks. Congress is bent on passing laws that will make these surcharges illegal while some cities and states are contemplating a downright ban on the banking practice.
