Beazley's silence is deafening

Article Abstract:

Kim Beazley of the Labor Party is silent on the most pressing political issue in Australia, the battle over who will run the waterfront, either the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), which is feather-bedded and monopolistic, or the stevedoring companies that own the facilities. During the return to Parliament for 1998 Labor seemed to be creating diversions, but this is the first real test for Beazley. The MUA is politically powerful in the Labor Party and a major source of funds for campaigns. Environmental funding, population, Indonesia's crisis and the IMF, and supporting the US in Iraq are hot issues in Australia.

Nun too amused by in-your-face gay activism

Article Abstract:

The 1998 Australian gay and lesbian Mardi Gras had little to do with past prejudice or injustice. However, it did manage to offend many people, as some participants dressed as nuns. Nuns offer care and love to dying AIDS patients and they deserve to get respect from everyone in the society. John Howard's government was right for not supporting Mardi Gras arguing that it showed a lack of respect for people who should be respected.
