Bonding and brutality: hazing survives as a way of forging loyalty to groups

Hazing still goes on in fraternities, sports teams, street gangs and in military units. Psychologists say the purpose of hazing is to make the individual surrender their personal identity to the group. Some hazing is harmless, but it can also result in brutality and even death.
