Bushwhacked

Article Abstract:

This article describes the widespread disaffection among the rural voters of Victoria and how this contributed to the stunning setback suffered by the the Liberal-National Coalition government of Premier Jeff Kennett in elections in October 1999. Relevant points include how a 10% shift toward the Australian Labor Party candidate in the city of Gisborne helped to defeat the Liberal candidate, and the belief of many voters that Kennett's government had done little for them and was taking their support for granted.

Hanson's rise may signal nationals' demise

Article Abstract:

The demise of the National Party has been predicted by many in Australia since 1970s. Some suggest the rise of Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party may signal that end. The National Party's coalition with Liberals has destroyed its identity, resulting in policy changes, loss of support, and creating a gap which the One Nation Party has fulfilled.
