Business owners score in Super Bowl

One hundred thirty local minority and women business owners in Atlanta, GA, have been given contracts connected to the 2000 Super Bowl game and its four days of related activities under the National Football League's Super Bowl Minority Business Development Program. The program was launched in 1994 and involves nine primary league contractors subcontracting work to local minority and women-owned businesses. The program encourages NFL sponsors, corporate affiliates and other corporate clients to do the same.

Merger prompts US West CEO to call it quits

U S WEST Inc's $35-billion union with Qwest Communications will result in the retirement of U S WEST CEO Solomon Trujillo. Trujillo, who admits to having a different view on structure and organization with Qwest CEO Joseph Nacchio, is expected to walk away with $210 million of his company's stocks. The latest development comes after the failure of an earlier power sharing scheme that also involved the combined company's chairman Philip Anschutz.

The Washington Wizards professional basketball team gained Michael Jordan, the sport's most celebrated player, as its president on Jan 19, 2000. The development is welcome news for the National Basketball Assn as well as the Wizards organization which has never entered a playoff since 1982. Jordan, who will take his place alongside Ted Leonsis as a co-owner of the Wizards, expects to play with his team during practice sessions.
