Canadian satellite providers to join forces

Canadian Satellite Communications (Cancom), based in Mississauga, Ontario, will merge with Star Choice Communications Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, in a C$77.7 million stock swap deal. The two satellite companies will team up to create a stronger company, with the capacity to expand faster in the growing satellite business. Under the terms of the proposed deal, Cancom will swap one Cancom share for 4.8 Star Choice shares. The deal will only materialize if 66.6% of Star Choice shareholders approve the proposal. Cancom offers satellite services to businesses and its core business is distributing TV signals to small and remote cable operators. Star Choice is a distributor of direct-to-home satellite TV signals in Canada. The two companies are controlled by cable giant Shaw Communications Inc.

Star Choice to add 8 new video channels

Star Choice Communications Inc. is planning to increase its video channel offering by adding eight more video channels to its direct-to-home satellite service within the 30 days. Currently, the company brings 80 video channels to its customers in Eastern Canada, while those in Western Canada captures 70 video channels. Star Choice has an option effect an agreement with WIC Western International Communications Ltd., giving it the choice of moving to the Nimiq satellite, which could allow subscribers to use 18-inch satellite dishes instead of the 24-inch satellite dishes currently in use.

Specialty TV to go to air sans fanfare
Article Abstract:
Several specialty channels are set to be launched in 1998 to cable channel subscribers, but as compared to the introduction of 16 channels in 1997, the debut will have less fanfare and cost. Among the channels that will debut is Sportsnet, which will provide sports programs to four Canadian regions and will bring the National Hockey League to cable subscribers. MuchMoreMusic is another channel that will be launched in 1998, targeting older music enthusiasts. The new channels will be delivered to cable subscribers free-of-charge by several companies.
