Both the Republican and Democratic Parties ignored campaign finance laws in their effort to win elections in 1996. Presidential and congressional candidates spent an estimated $2.8 billion for their campaigns, which is almost double what they had spent during the 1992 election year.

Major's meltdown: angry miners, economic gloom and rebel MPs are rocking Britain's Tory government

Major ordered 31 of 50 government coal mines closed in Oct 92 because of the weak economy. Others joined the miners in their protest against the policy. Major relented and will close 10 mines in 1992. The economic health of the UK is examined.
