American Family will pay $33M settlement

American Family Enterprises has agreed to pay $33 million to people who bought magazine subscriptions, hoping that these would increase their chances in winning at its American Family Publishers sweepstakes. The settlement is the largest for a sweepstakes and ends a class-action suit that accused American Family of using aggressive sales methods. As part of the settlement, American Family will hold a $1 million sweepstakes, in which 10 people chosen randomly will win $100,000 each.

Publisher to run Primedia division

Primedia has appointed publisher Steven Brill as the head of the new division, called Media Central, which houses the company's media trade magazines and other services. Brill is tasked to oversee 172 properties, including 'Folio' magazine, 'American Demographics,' 'Cable World' and reports from the recently acquired Paul Kagan Associates. Brill's appointment came after Primedia acquired 49% of his company, Brill's Media.
