Article Abstract:

Australian prime minister John Howard has plans to change the way non-government schools are funded in the country. The socio-economic status (SES) system will be used to determine schools' funding needs from students' economic information. Howard is being urged to promise that no schools will lose funding in the change to the SES system. Catholic schools, which represent 70% of all non-government schools, will benefit most from the new system.

Australia's House of Representatives election on November 10 may result in independents holding the balance of power. While Prime Minister John Howard urges people that an independent vote is a wasted vote, independents argue that they are never in opposition and, as a result, can work with any government in power.
