New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna proposed a plan called Guaranteed Annual Employment that would consolidate social service programs such as welfare, unemployment compensation and job training into one central agency. The money saved could be put into additional training programs.

Alberta Premier Ralph Klein and House of Commons member Alan Redway have proposed changes to the pension plans for politicians. The eligibility and payout policies need to be changed to be more comparable with Canadians who receive pensions.

Ice age: an unremitting storm leaves millions without power
Article Abstract:
A devastating ice storm cut electric power to millions in Quebec, Ontario and Atlantic Canada in Jan 1998. The storm ruined trees, threatened water supplies and forced evacuations in some areas. Montreal was especially hard hit.
