Charm and commercialism sour mix in Margaritaville
Article Abstract:
Increasing commercial development and growing visitor numbers are threatening the very essence of Key West, FL's travel and tourism market. The country's southernmost island's quiet atmosphere and clear beaches are affected by the substantial increase in visitors from 1.9 million in 1990 to 2.9 million in 1998. Although economic gains are felt and reflected in the $424 billion spending for travel and tourism in 1998, some areas have already imposed restrictions to curb excessive travel numbers that are forcing some residents to leave for more quiet places.

Can of Worms
Article Abstract:
People have been harvesting earthworms for years in the Florida Panhandle, paying $30 annually for a permit to do so. The National Forest Service has announced a new $3 tax per can of 500 worms harvested. The harvesters have protested, saying that the tax will eliminate the small profit they now make from selling the worms. Ramifications of the tax and the unusual subculture of harvesters are discussed.
