China, India drive record sales of cars

The largest number of cars were sold in 2004 than ever before in countries such as China and India which began to drive global auto industry growth. The developing world is expected to lead the auto industry forward, in particular China and India, because they have rapid growth and huge, nearly car-free populations.

The outbreak of SARS, severe acute respiratory syndrome, in Asia has greatly impacted the region's export economy. China's light manufacturing sector, which is heavily concentrated in the southern part of the country where the SARS outbreak hit hardest, has suffered from labor shortages.
