Should all children be given free immunizations?
Article Abstract:
Debate over the governments role in childhood immunizations hinges on the issues of tracking patients and further research and development of new vaccines. Those who favor state-sponsored immunization propose a system in which the government buys the vaccine and distributes it on a need basis. Physicians would be required to take part in an immunization-tracking system, and the government would pay a rate for vaccines that would give the industry a profit and encourage research. Opponents of this plan say the issue is not cost but the education of parents and the lack of tracking and follow-up.

Should the Head Start program be expanded?
Article Abstract:
Supporters of the Head Start program believe that total involvement and investment in the program will help achieve its goals to effectively introduce children to school activities, improve family relationships and raise worker effectiveness. Contenders point out, however, that the short-term advantages of Head Start may be provided more effectively through various private and community initiatives. The government could also redirect the program's funds toward subsidizing the costs of sending children to to schools chosen by their parents.

Is the new Vaccines for Children program improving immunization rates in the United States?
Article Abstract:
David Satcher claims the Vaccines for Children (VAC) program is working well, but FE Thompson Jr says it threatens to damage the progress Mississippi is making on its own. VFC is a component of the Childhood Immunization Initiative, and it seeks to make vaccines more widely available and affordable, and to create links with public and private providers. In MS, funds once used to buy vaccines available to all have been cut, and replaced with funds that can only buy vaccines for certain health centers, greatly limiting availability.
