Defense lawyers for accused murderer Paul Jason Teale have asked the courts to ban press coverage of the manslaughter trial of Teale's wife, Karla Homolka. If the judge grants the ban, Canadian journalists could not report details of the case, and American journalists would be encouraged to comply with the ban.

Ontario Finance Minister Ernie Eves' budget features sweeping cuts. Aid to municipalities is to be cut by roughly $500 million, while the education budget incurs a $800 million cut. Arts institutions and business subsidies also are targeted for cuts, but day care subsidies have thus far been spared.

Canadian immigration officials allowed a group of Chinese nationals to enter the country in Apr 1995 on the pretext that they were attending a suburban Toronto trade meeting. Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigators criticized immigration officials for their lax enforcement of immigration laws.
