Supply-side economics, also known as trickle-down theory, was popular in the 1980s and is being revived by US Republicans and some Canadian Tories. However, the theory that tax cuts will stimulate the economy and result in greater productivity and savings rates is flawed.

Both the US and Canada are likely to post record rates of corporate mergers and acquisitions for 1995. The total dollar amount hit $43.3 billion in Canada for the first six months of 1995, while US activity has increased 20% over 1994. Several acquisitions are discussed.
