From rags to riches: Drabinsky builds a musical from the ground up

The premiere of Drabinsky's $11.5-million 'Ragtime' musical at Toronto's Ford Centre for the Performing Arts in Dec 1996 was well-received. Although Drabinsky used marketing research to shape and market the production, he is outraged at the suggestion that his aim was to manipulate the audience.

Walt Disney Co's stage adaptation of 'Beauty and the Beast' will open on Aug 8, 1995, at Toronto's Prince of Wales Theatre. Disney CEO Michael Eisner, who attended a July 1995 preview performance of the $17-million Toronto production, plans a major commitment to musical theater at Disney.
