Chretien cannot lead this divided Canada
Article Abstract:
The Jun 1997 election produced a government heavily divided on geographical lines. Most of the ministers come from Quebec, but are beholden to Ontario. The official opposition's base is western Canada, and Atlantic Canada backed the New Democratic Party. Chretien is not the best person to unite Canada.

The 'Chilean solution' takes root in Ontario
Article Abstract:
The Toronto, Ontario, police have been refusing to wear their uniform hats with their badge numbers displayed and have not been enforcing traffic and parking laws to protest a new regulation. The new regulation requires police to file a report whenever they remove their gun from their holster.

In praise of the sporting life
Article Abstract:
Some of the best journalistic writing is done by sports writers because they have a sense of enthusiasm and humor about their topic. Political reporting and editorials could be improved by assigning more sports writers to them. The late Red Smith was one of the best sports writers.
