Debate over numbers
Article Abstract:
A debate over the number of homeless individuals in the US was sparked by the Community for Creative Non-Violence in 1980 when it came up with alarming statistics. The group revealed that 2.2 million people or 1% of the population were without adequate shelter. The Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1981 came out with its own study and results indicated that the private group's figures were exaggerated. The government data indicated the number of homeless individuals within the range of 250,000 to 350,000.

Uncertain future
Article Abstract:
The fate of the homeless in US society is unclear. Many cities regard homeless individuals with disdain and nonchalance. While prevention programs have been discovered to be effective, many citizens do not like them implemented in their neighborhoods. For homeless drug patients, the high financial cost of rehabilitation is a drawback. It is contended that unless society treats its minority population more humanely, the number of homeless individuals continuously be on the rise.
