South Korea's contentious presidential election of December, 1997 comes at the worst possible time. Collapse of the nation's financial system was prevented by a last-minute International Monetary Fund bailout, extended under condition of strict, IMF-style fiscal policy. Jingoistic posturing by some presidential candidates threatens to further hinder financial recovery.

Chopper down over Kunar

Two Special Forces Chinook helicopter, of which one of the lead Chinook helicopter was shot down at the Kunar border region of Afghanistan on 28 June 2005 by a rocket-propelled grenade. These two helicopters were in search for a lost reconnaissance team in the treacherous Kunar border region of Afghanistan.
