Article Abstract:
The rules of war changed when dropping the atomic bomb in 1945 proved it was possible to win a war without ground troops. The death toll in the Vietnam conflict of the 1960s and 1970s convinced the population of the US that a war without ground troops is not only possible but preferable. The Vietnam conflict should also have taught Americans that superior technology does not guarantee victory.
