Cults in America
Article Abstract:
Religious cults have been expanding in the US since the 1960s, and from 10 to 20 million Americans have recently been involved with one cult or another. Many cults are now run as business enterprises, and the Unification Church and the Church of Scientology are two of the many that are now international. Defenders of cults cite First Amendment rights and claim deprogrammers use the very same brainwash tactics cults have been accused of employing. The Branch Davidians and many other cults are discussed.

The new voluntarism: is America poised for a surge in good works?
Article Abstract:
Voluntarism in America is seen as a way to make up for declining government help to those in need, but its political boundaries are unclear. Federal incentives and works such as AmeriCorps are in debate, with conservatives opposing new bureaucracy. Welfare reform has spurred the call for more voluntarism, given the reform bill passed in 1996. Expanded volunteer recruitment efforts are underway in suburbs and at high schools.
