DNA testing now plays an important evidenciary role in North American criminal cases, though some doubts about its efficacy persist. DNA evidence persuaded the Ontario Court of Appeal to exonerate Guy Paul Morin, and it is expected to be used prominently in the O.J. Simpson double murder case.

Canadian citizens Christine Lamont and David Spencer were convicted of kidnapping Sao Paulo, Brazil businessman Abilio Diniz in 1989. Lamont and Spencer claim they were not involved in the kidnapping and that they are imprisoned by politics.
