Australian Prime Minister John Howard has some influence with US President George W. Bush, although media coverage of his influence is absent from the US media, and somewhat derided in Australia. Howard was in the US when the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks occurred and advised Bush at that time, and supports Bush's plans to take action against Iraq.

It is necessary for a political party to win the battle of ideas in order to gain or retain power and this battle of idea proposition is similar in the politics of Australia and the United States. The real problem with the Democrats is that their ideas tend to go unnoticed as they are out of power.
