Dell's earnings jump 62%
Article Abstract:
Dell Computer's claim that it has unseated Compaq as the country's top maker of desktop personal computer is being disputed by Compaq. Dell made the claim following announcements that its earnings increased by 62% in the quarter that ended Aug. 31, 1998. Dell reported that it earned $346 million, or 50 cents per diluted share in the period that it reported. However, Compaq is challenging the claim citing second-quarter figures compiled from research firm Dataquest. Dataquest data revealed that Compaq's shipping of 1,108,465 PCs, exceeds Dell's 1,090,000 PCs.

Lone Star state rivals duke it out
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computers, based in Houston, TX, the leading personal computer manufacturer in the world, is locked in competition with the fastest-growing personal computer manufacturer in the world, Dell, based in Round Rock, TX. In an era of record growth and massive change, Dell is the company to watch, as it is capable of providing custom-ordered personal computers. Compaq, which operates in 100 countries and has more than twice the number of workers at Dell, is having a hard time shifting to where the market is because of its size.

Struggling Compaq fires CEO
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer was terminated on Apr 18, 1999, because the company's effort was not sufficient enough to make the company a leader on the Internet. Pfeiffer's termination and the resignation of the company's CFO, Earl Mason, came less than 10 days after company shareholders learned that Compaq's earnings would just be 50% of what was anticipated. Compaq's AltaVista site is one of the most popular Web sites and its computers operate some of the biggest sites on the Internet.
