Deprogrammers to the rescue: some call it kidnapping
Article Abstract:
Families have paid people since the early 1970s to forcibly take their loved ones out of religious cults and deprogram them. Deprogramming usually consists of sitting the cult member down in a nondescript room and forcing him or her to confront the shortcomings of cult theology. Ted Patrick developed the technique. Critics claim that deprogramming is sanctioned brainwashing, and has disastrous effects on the victim. An alternative is voluntary counselling by ex-cult members, but deprogrammers feel this method is not severe enough to be effective.
