Digital radio boots up

Digital radio broadcasting has arrived in Canada. The Canadian Radio- television and Telecommunications Commission has so far awarded licenses to 19 stations in Toronto, 12 in Vancouver and nine in Montreal. Digital radio offers CD-quality, crisp sound that just cannot be obtained with today's AM and FM receivers. Moreover, proponents of the technology say future users will be able to receive additional services such as personalized messages and other information.

British Columbia radio broadcaster Rafe Mair was fired by CKNW because of some controversial language that he uttered on the air. Mair was perhaps the most popular radio broadcaster in the province, if not in all of Canada.
