Profit push tests TV allies

Major US networks CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox are pushing independent stations to help boost the business as viewership in the season that started in Sep 1998 dropped to 49 mil viewers from 52 mil viewers in the same period from the previous year. Each network has around 200 affiliate stations, most of which have agreements that will expire to around 2004. The networks' business is shrinking due to soaring programming costs, evaporating profit margins and growing competition from cable companies. ; ;;

Theater operators are faced with the dilemna of squeezed profit despite strong ticket sales due to an increased need to build state-of-the-art theater complexes. To remain competitive, theater companies are always on the lookout for expansion opportunities. The expansion efforts of theater companies have squeezed their profits as expansion translates prime real estate spaces, construction expenses and new theater equipment.
