Early censorship battles
Article Abstract:
A history of school textbook censorship in the US is presented. During the 19th century, Mark Twain's 'Huckleberry Finn' was once criticized as a purveyor of immorality and bad grammar. US textbooks experienced much controversy following the end of World War I. Textbook censorhip garnered much publicity following the case of schoolteacher John Scopes, who taught Darwinian evolutionary theories. The 1930s and 1950s saw the rise of crackdowns against publications deemed morally and politically incorrect.

When textbook critics find errors
Article Abstract:
Right-wing textbook activists Mel and Norma Gabler are utilizing a new tactic to reform the US school publication industry. Through their Texas-based Educational Research Analysts group, the Gablers have now concentrated on the search for mundane historical inaccuracies in textbooks as a means to gain national acceptance. Book publishers call the move a diversionary tactic of the Gablers, a means of camouflaging their ultimate goal of promoting Christian fundamentalism in the education system.

Are parents who challenge certain schoolbooks engaging in censorship?
Article Abstract:
Religious right activists believe that the act of prohibiting the use of certain publications which they deem morally unacceptable does not constitute censorship. Some even have gone as far to state that censorhip in some cases may be a reasonable alternative. Progressive elements in the US educational system argue that these actions undertaken by elements of the religious right are nothing short but attempts to control the country's educational system.
