Penny Ericson, an ceramics artist, finds inspiration in the rocks of New Zealand's Hauraki Gulf region. Ericson began working with ceramics in 1990 and regards the art as a journey of discovery. She uses materials such as black sand, pumice, and ash. Her work reflects a sense of place and is recognized because it is personal and does not follow prevailing fashions.

One hundred and fifty years after dying in the attempt to blaze a trail north from Rockingham Bay to Cape York, explorer Edmund Kennedy is remembered with a national park named in his honor. The coastal wetlands near where Kennedy died in an Aborigine attack now play host to visitors who can hike the Kennedy Walking Track.
