Evidence reveals dirty secrets on auto emissions tests' failings
Article Abstract:
Evidence is mounting that state emissions testing programs are far from achieving the EPA's vision of conisderable reductions in air pollution. The problem is that the EPA, which has pushed the tests as the best way to clean the air, is using the wrong approach to achieve its objective and this is unfortunately costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually with little to show for it. The use of less expensive remote sensing devices, for instance, that would detect polluting vehicles as they drive past a sensor, would save drivers from needless headaches.

GM to pay $5.5 million in seat belt lawsuit
Article Abstract:
General Motors has decided to pay Harold Tucker $5.5 million to settle a lawsuit that Tucker filed against the automobile manufacturer. In his lawsuit, Tucker, who was paralzyed in a car accident, claimed that the company's seat belt system was defective. The agreement came after a jury awarded the same amount in compensatory damages to Tucker. General Motors, however, still maintains that its seat belts are not defective and that Tucker was not using the seat belt when the accident happened.

1999 auto sales set record
Article Abstract:
US automobile manufacturers sold a record of 16.9 million cars and light trucks in 1999 compared to 16 million units sold in 1986 15.6 million in 1998. Ford Motor Co's VP for global consumer services Bob Rewey attributed the record-breaking sales and earnings in 1999 to innovative products, confident consumers and a strong economy. While carmakers expect that these factors will still be present this year, they predict that 2000 will not be as strong as 1999.
