Trust move would face backlash

Article Abstract:

The radical move to constrict the tax treatment of income trusts by the federal government in 2004 would provoke a huge investor backlash before a federal election. Income trusts have experienced growth partly because of their appeal to small investors looking for a regular stream of income.

Federal regulator drafting plan to keep airlines competitive

Article Abstract:

Canada's federal Competition Bureau is formmulating a plan to maintain competition in the airline industry. The industry is facing the prospect of a merger between Air Canada and Canadian Airlines International Ltd, a proposal forwarded by Onex Corp that will result in the creation of a lone domestic carrier. The Competition Bureau, which is expected to deliver a report on the matter by the end of Sep 1999 or early Oct 1999, has been asked for its advise by Transport Minister David Collenette.
