Gordon Nixon, the chief executive officer of Royal Bank of Canada, said that consolidation in the Canadian banking industry will be slowed by government action. But RBC still is expected to expand its banking operations in the United States.

Ernst & Young settles with Confed liquidator

The liquidator of bankrupt Confederation Life Insurance Co. (Confed) will receive 17.5 million Canadian dollars from Ernst and Young in order to avoid a possible lawsuit. The lawsuit involved Ernst and Young's role as Confed's auditor.
