GM strike squeezes Oshawa truck facility
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp. truck facility in Oshawa, Ontario is expected to shut down operations on Jul. 22, 1998, according to the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW). The CAW projected that the facility would run out of parts on Jul. 17, 1998, but recanted saying that it would close today following a downtown period which allowed the facility to continue operations longer than expected. The Oshawa facility is one of only three remaining GM assembly facilities still operating in North America. Twenty-five other GM facilities have closed down as a result of strikes at two Flint, MI-based GM plants.

The deal will allow Abitibi to enhance its presence in the international paper products market. The move also reflects the efforts of the firm to capitalize on the low value of Asian assets due to the financial crisis affecting the region.

GM strike threatening to shut down auto industry
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp. suffered plant shutdowns in Oshawa, Ontario, as a result of the continuing strike by the company's workers in Flint, MI. The closure of six manufacturing facilities of General Motors in the US poses a threat to the automotive business of Ontario, since it creates a ripple effect such as shortages in automotive components and a slowdown in manufacturing operations. The development also hurts Canadian suppliers to General Motors' manufacturing plants due to the stoppage of normal auto-supply chain operations in the region.
