A justified ban on 'Baby Bells.' (telephone companies) (editorial)
Article Abstract:
The Senate Commerce Committee's decision to approve a bill to overturn the regulatory manufacturing ban on the seven regional Bell telephone companies meets with considerable opposition from some quarters. Some observers argue that, while more competition is generally better for the consumer, this does not apply when an entrant into the market is a regulated monopolist. The main danger is that the local phone companies will overcharge local rate payers and use the money to subsidize sales of their own communications equipment. They also argue that, because there are so many companies already competing for market share, the introduction of seven more will not hold any particular benefit for the overall market.

GTE leads major test of personal phone devices
Article Abstract:
GTE Corp will conduct a $30 million test of personal communication services (PCS) in Tampa Bay-St Petersburg, FL, that will involve 3,000 customers. PCS, touted as the future wireless technology, uses a cordless phone to reach areas near the user's house or the 'home zone.' Such a localized service will cost from $15 to $40 a month while the premium service that will allow the customer to call a number that is far from his house will cost from 7 cents to 25 cents a minute. GTE's test will last through Dec 1993 and will seek to determine how mobile users actually want to be and their reactions to various prices. The PCS test is done in cooperation with AT&T, Northern Telecom of Canada and Oki Telecom of Japan.
