Gene therapy's future: have scientists gone too far too fast?
Article Abstract:
Gene therapy is a controversial topic because opponents are concerned about the ethics of patenting DNA and genetically engineered animals while others are worried about rushed human trials. Biotechnology firms are being pressured by investors and commercial interests to produce results when the research and development process can take 10 years. Government oversight is both too lax and involves duplicate efforts that delay research. Genetic engineering has important potential but ethical and oversight issues need to be addressed before human trials are approved.

New military culture: do women, blacks and homosexuals get fair treatment?
Article Abstract:
Changes in the types of people serving in the armed forces have spawned a new military culture that includes extremism. The substantial increases in the number of homosexuals, women, and African Americans can be linked to the upsurge of sexual harassment cases, the fight over the right of homosexuals to serve, and racist actions. The military needs to deal more fairly with these new groups and to discourage extremist displays such as swastikas and extremist activities.
