Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Atal Behari Vajpayee was sworn in as India's prime minister in May 1996, but he may not be in office very long because his administration faces a confidence vote on May 31, 1996. BJP has only 195 out of 545 seats in the lower house of parliament.

Thackeray, leader of the Hindu nationalist party Shiv Sena, has been the driving force behind the renaming of Bombay, India, to Mumbai, which is set to take place in Jan 1996. He is a powerful figure in India who has been convicted of inciting hate against the Muslim minority.

Out of a job, again; Benazir Bhutto vows to fight her dismissal

Pakistani Press Farooq Leghari used the courts to remove Bhutto from power, charging her with allowing the police to abuse their power against ethnic uprisings in Karachi. He also charged that Bhutto is leading the country to financial ruin.
