Article Abstract:

An overview is provided of the current trend in studies of the mind, namely technology-driven neuroscience. Academics such as cultural anthropologist Clifford Geertz see the need for a multi-displinary approach to mind studies, in order to avoid the science from become too bogged down in a mechanistic approach.

Language barrier

Article Abstract:

The acquisition of new languages becomes increasingly difficult with age, beyond the age of 12. The ability to speak a language as well as a native speaker, however, cuts off at 12 months because by then the neural pathways in the auditory cortex have been developed.

Journey to the centre of the self

Neurological studies where the patient appears to have basic consciousness without having any memory or language are discussed, with the conclusion that core consciousness can exist without these.
