Grampian to buy 19.5% stake in Cobequid

Grampian Pharmaceuticals Holdings Ltd., based in London, UK, is acquiring a 19.5-percent stake in Cobequid Life Sciences Inc., along with a convertible debenture that could improve its interest to 40%. Grampian will invest C$3.8 million through a private placement of 850,000 new shares in the Richmond Hill, Ontario-based Cobequid, and through a C$2.9-million debenture that could be converted into 3.1 million common shares. Previously, Grampian bought 952,000 Cobequid shares from Working Ventures Investment Fund for an undisclosed amount. Cobequid, a maker of vaccines for the aquaculture business, will hold a shareholder meeting in September 1998 to decide on the debenture conversion.

HSBC gains U.S. clout, but cost is high
